It was the first venue constructed among the other performance venues around Detroit’s Grand Circus Park.

The venue was reported as the fifth largest movie theater in the world with 3500 seats. The Capitol Theater was renamed as the Paramount Theater in 1929 and as Broadway Capitol Theater in 1934.

The venue was restored in 1960 and named as Grand Circus Venue with 3367 seats. Architect Eric J. Hill participated in its restoration. In 1988 the Michigan Opera Theatre bought the building and restored the venue and expanded the stage. The theater was reopened in 1996 with a gala event featuring Luciano Pavarotti and other noted artists. Now the venue holds 2700 patrons.

The Opera House was constructed in Italian Renaissance style with lavish crystal chandeliers, frescoes, brass fixtures, marble stairways and drinking fountains. Detroit Opera House serves as a home to the productions of Michigan Opera Theatre, Broadway shows, Dance Programs and other events.
